Briefing Sheet for teacher
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this session the students should:
Be able to be develop an understanding of the issues associated with effective communication.
The role of the teacher
Get the class to work in pairs.
Get them to label themselves A & B
Instructthem not to show their partner its contents.
Give the instructions to each pair (Instructions A to student A & Instructions B to student B).
The students should be given 30 minutes to follow the instructions on the sheets.
Work with a partner, but do not show your partner the contents of this briefing sheet. After each task compare the original picture with the one that you/your partner has drawn. Can you get a measure of how effective the communication between your partner and yourself by a comparison of how similar/different the two pictures are?
Task 1-Write a letter that describes Picture A to your partner. Pass the letter to your partner and your partner should try to reproduce Picture A without seeing it. You are not allowed to answer any questions about picture A. You are only allowed to use the written word in the letter-NO PICTURES/DIAGRAMS ALLOWED!!

Task 2-You will receive an 'letter' from your partner that describes a Picture B. You are allowed to 'write back' to your partner back a maximum of twice for clarification. However, you are only allowed to use the written word in the e-mail-NO PICTURES/DIAGRAMS ALLOWED!! (In reality you will just pass written notes to each other as we do not have enough time for the postman to deliver the letters!)
Task 3-Sit back to back with your partner. Describe Picture C to your partner. You are not allowed to look at what your partner is drawing as they do it, but you may answer as many questions as you like.

Task4-Sit face-to-face with your partner. They will have a conversation with you in which they describe Picture D whilst you draw it. They are allowed to see what you are drawing and make suggestions on how to improve it.
